Walking

The Ecclefechan Hotel is ideally situated as a base for walkers in Dumfries and Galloway. The hotel is a short distance from Hoddom Castle which is the start (or finish) for three of the stages of the Annandale Way. We are the perfect stopping point for a good hearty meal in front of a real log fire. All  preparing you for a good nights sleep after a relaxing bath to soak your aching feet. Below is some information on the Annandale Way.

There are also numerous options in the surrounding area, from local walks around the village to walks that are further afield. These include the popular, gentle, walk at Talkin Tarn near Brampton and the more strenuous ascent of Grey Mare's Tail near Moffat, which offers spectacular views from the top.

Walkers are always welcome at The Ecclefechan Hotel.

The Annandale Way

The Annandale Way is a new route that runs from the top of the valley at Annandale Head in the hills north of the town of Moffat to the mouth of the River Annan and the Solway Firth.

Annandale Head is the start of the route but it lies away from roads so the first day of the Annandale Way is a loop north from Moffat, climbing from the banks of the River Annan to heather moorland and rolling hills with the dramatic deep scoop of the Devil's Beef Tub prominent before descending back to the town. From Moffat the route makes its way south through farmland, forest and moorland, passing under the M74 motorway and over the West Coast rail line.
